Six Flags Over Texas: Year-round fun and thrills for all ages

May 20, 2010

Since 1963, families and thrill-seekers have made Six Flags Over Texas one of the top amusement attractions in the Southwest. Six Flags  Over Texas features more than 100 thrilling rides and attractions, including  mega-coasters like Titan and the Texas Giant.

The park works hard to please kids of all ages with roller coasters for the big kids, plus a variety of family-friendly shows and attractions, including themed areas like Looney Tunes USA. From maximum thrill rated rides like Batman the Ride to the relaxing rumble of Six Flags’ 107-year-old Charles Jefferson Patton steam engine train ride, there is something for everyone.

Located smack-dab between Dallas and Fort Worth in Arlington, Texas, the park sees thousands of visitors virtually every day it is open.

Named for the six flags that have flown over Texas (i.e., France, Spain, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the Confederate States of America, and the United States of America), the park was originally plotted out in themed sections representing each of the flags and one for the modern era.

Though the park has expanded and updated its rides and attractions over the years, visitors can still find many of the original rides and landmarks in the park, including the Texas Chute Out and the iconic red Oil Derrick Tower. From the top of both, one can see the vistas of Dallas and Fort Worth. Of course, one can enjoy the view a slightly little longer at the top of the oil derrick vs. the few seconds at the top of the chute ride.

It is easy to spend a full day in the park with the numerous restaurants and snack vendors located around every corner. Offering everything from salads to funnel cakes, Six Flags can satisfy any diet.

In 2009, the park started offering beer to its adult patrons. Beer is sold at six restaurants in the park between noon and two hours before the park closes. Customers must consume their beer in the restaurant or patio  where it was purchased. To keep the balance between enjoying an adult beverage and enjoying a family-friendly atmosphere, patrons caught with beer outside of the designated locations will be asked to leave the park.

HelloMetro Tips:  As expected, the park sees high attendance during its summer hours, especially on  weekends. To get the most out of the park, try visiting when attendance is lightest: weekdays during the summer or during the off season months of April, May, September and October. During the off-season, Six Flags also offers fun holiday-themed décor and events like like “Fright Fest” in October and “Holiday In The Park” during November and  December.

Planning ahead can also help save some cash. Buying tickets online can save almost $20 on an adult general admission ticket.

Check out the online calendar. Since the park’s hours vary based on the season and other factors, Six Flags provides the calendar of the most up-to-date hours and schedules.
