Hip Pocket Theatre: An inspiring theatrical experience under the stars

Jun 1, 2010

The world-renowned Hip Pocket Theatre, an open-air theatre tucked away in a semi-bucolic setting, celebrates another year as one of the best theatre experiences in North Texas.

Now in its 34th season, the theatre has craftily hewn a captivating line up of original and re-imagined productions. The season starts on June 4, with the premiere of the original play The Angel Play - A Suicide Burlesque written and directed by Johnny Simons. The theatre describes it as, “A fanciful echo of souls passing through the gates of heaven in skies above Paradise Rock.”

The play runs every weekend through June 24. Tickets can be purchased online for all performances but opening night. To attend opening night, call (817) 246-9775 for reservations. The show starts at 9 p.m. with gates opening at 7 p.m.

The remainder of the season continues with performances of:

--  Etiquette Unraveled : July 8–18, Thursday through Sunday at 9 p.m.
--  Edward Abbey – Wild and Iron Sky : July 22–Aug. 1, Thursday through Sunday at 9 p.m.
--  Cowtown Puppetry Festival presents Lowdown Wax: Aug. 6 –22, Friday through Sunday at 9 p.m.
--  6th Annual Puppet Pageant:  Aug. 20–22, Friday through Sunday at 7 p.m.
--  Circus Salome: Sept. 3–26, Friday through Sunday at 8:15 p.m.
--  On the Origins of the Specifics–The Musical: Oct. 8–31, Friday through Sunday at 8:15 p.m.

All shows are precluded with a live outdoor concert by local and regional musicians. Musical acts are usually determined just in advance of a play’s premiere. To find out what musicians are scheduled for any given performance, check out the Backyard Music schedule.

As for refreshments, Hip Pocket Theatre has it covered by offering a range of beverages as well as sandwiches and even salads.

For descriptive synopses of the upcoming plays, check out the theatre’s season schedule.

HelloMetro Tips: Even though shows are in the evening, this is outside in Texas. It will be very warm — into the 80s and the 90s as the summer rolls on. Consider bringing along a quiet paper hand fan or even a damp washcloth in a plastic bag to help keep cool. Wearing light summery clothes goes without saying.

As it is outside and in a rural setting, it’s also a good idea to smooth on some bug repellant before a show.

Keep in mind the seating is on wooden benches. So, take along a pillow or stadium seat if needed.
