The Pearl Cup pours up tasty coffee with a local green flavor
Pucker up, coffee cup. There is a new coffee shop in town with a cozy green space on Henderson Avenue that offers great tasting local coffees and treats. The Pearl Cup Espresso Bar was constructed with an Earth-conscious eye and locally sustainable commerce from the soy-based insulation in the walls to its signature drink — the Pearl Latte.
“We get a lot of compliments on our signature latte,” said Austin Barge, store manager about the smooth drink that has received a lot of buzz among the coffeehouse crowds. “I can’t tell you what’s in it. It’s top secret.”
Part of the secret is found in the coffee itself. The Pearl Cup gets a semi-weekly coffee delivery from local coffee maker, Coffee Eiland.
The coffee shop offers the usual variety of coffees you'd expect, plus some off the beaten path —including an authentic Italian egg cream.
Unless ordered to-go, all the Pearl Cup coffees are served in large, supple white porcelain cups. Even water and cool drinks come served in etched glasses. The idea not only makes for a luxurious drink experience, but also keeps hundreds of paper cups from hitting the trash every day. If patrons do need a coffee to-go, the shop uses 100% recycled and recyclable paper cups.
Named after the street one of the co-founders (Rita Davis) grew up on and in memory of her grandmother’s favorite necklace, the Pearl Cup opened its doors back in February.
The shop wants to focus on making a big impression on the local neighborhood without a big carbon footprint. According to Saelg, the Pearl Cup is powered completely with wind energy in an effort to be as green as possible.
The management intends to boost local flavor in a number of ways, including live local music, art and a menu based on locally produced coffee and treats.
Snuggled into the Lower Greenville Avenue neighborhood east of Central Expressway, the Pearl Cup holds a generous-sized space for a coffee shop within the sage-green structure at the corner of Henderson and McMillan Avenues.
The coffee shop gives local artists a place to display their artwork and hopes to continue to support local artists and musicians with live shows.
