Dallas Shakespeare plays up summer season

Published: Jun 22, 2009

The 38th season of Dallas Shakespeare is under way with two of the bard’s most colorful plays: The Taming of the Shrew and The Merry Wives of Windsor. Both comedies are presented with a Texas-style twist and run through to the end of July.

The season opens June 27 with The Merry Wives of Windsor and alternates with performances of The Taming of the Shrew at the Samuell-Grand Amphitheatre.

The Dallas Shakespeare version of The Taming of the Shrew takes place in the middle of the 1800s on the western frontier while remaining true to the 16th century Italian comedy. It tells the story of two sisters and two suitors; one of the sisters has a wild streak and it will take a confident man to court her.

The play runs Sundays, Tuesdays, and Saturdays.

With a slight twist on the title, The Merry Wives of Windsor, TX, tells the story of Colonel John Falstaff who shows up in Windsor, Texas, to celebrate Veteran's Day in 1965. He gets himself into trouble as he tries to seduce two women in town out of their money. The Merry Wives runs Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.

The curtain raises on all performances at 8:15 p.m. Dates and tickets for both plays can be found on the Dallas Shakespeare web site. Admission for Friday and Saturday performances is $10 for adults and $7 seniors and students.

Performances on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays are free, though a $10 donation is requested. Children 12 and under are always free for all performances.

Samuell-Grand Amphitheatre is in Samuell-Grand Park next to the Tennison golf course. Patrons can bring along coolers, picnic foods, blankets and lawn chairs.

Dallas Shakespeare also offers chairs for rent and concessions for purchase at the amphitheater. Adults 21 and over are welcome to bring beer and wine to the park. However, no hard liquor is permitted.

The park opens for general admission theater goers at 7:30 p.m. Attended parking lot areas are $5 per car. There is no charge to park on the street.
