Dallas' Ku Sushi - A Japanese Cuisine Oasis

Apr 3, 2010

One of the best kept secrets of Dallas cuisine is tucked away in the southwest corner of Preston Forest shopping center – Ku Sushi – a sushi lover’s delight.

I happened upon this little sushi restaurant by chance one afternoon and have been introducing my friends to one of the best sushi restaurants in Dallas ever since.

Step inside and you’re immediately calmed by the coolly modern interior – a trickling glass waterfall, black walls studded by a large big screen TV – perfect for the sports fanatic in your life – and an equally large knick knack case farther back, filled with Asian artifacts.

The sashimi and the sushi are fresher than fresh – no hint of that fishy taste or smell. Most of it is a dieter’s delight – riceless. Most of the sushi is wrapped in cucumber strips. The presentation is flawless – a hint of the deliciousness to come.

The edamame is crisp and salty served in its own steaming basket.

Try the Ahi Tuna Tower – sushi rice, avocado, prepared crabmeat and spicy tuna stacked on a serving plate topped with three kinds of caviar and three kinds of special sauce.  The ingredients are presented stacked in a tower.  The attentive staff will ask if you want them to mix the dish for you. Do yourself a favor and let them do it.

Favorites are the special rolls – the Candy Cane can be had all year - and not just during the holidays – salmon, crabmeat, avocado and tuna with super white tuna and two kinds of sauce – a spicy orange sauce made with what tastes like chili sauce and Japanese mayonnaise and a white sweet sauce made from rice wine.  The White Russian roll has tuna, yellowtail, asparagus, super white tuna and jalapeno topped with black caviar.  And, spice lovers will enjoy the Tears in Heaven roll – smoked salmon, avocado, cucumber, Japanese hot mustard and, of course, wasabi – bring your hankie for this one.

At the end of your meal, the attentive wait staff will bring you a specially peeled orange to clean your palate – the perfect ending to a special meal.

HelloDallas tip: If you’re in Grapevine, Texas, west/southwest of Dallas, check out Ku’s sister restaurant Daan Sushi at Grapevine Mills.
