Vickery Boulevard Café: Good eats at good prices

Jul 18, 2010

For a new bite of classic local flavor, the Vickery Boulevard Café has all the ingredients. This family diner has only been open since Spring 2010, but already has the feel of a long-established local haunt.

The kitschy atmosphere includes all the expected comforts of diner tables, vinyl booths and a bar where patrons can watch the wait staff dance in and out of the kitchen. The dinnerware includes milky white plates with mix-matched design patterns. There’s a classic glass and mirrored dessert case full of sweet looking treats, including the Vickery Café favorite – buttermilk chess.

The restaurant took over the old spot occupied by the once locally popular Burdav's Café. When the space became available, restaurateur Moe Haddad leaped on the opportunity to open up his vision for a friendly diner spot where people could gather and enjoy the atmosphere and the omelets.

As one of Vickery Café’s the specialties, the omelets are rolled with a gourmet chef’s care. The eggs come out cooked evenly with a fluffy texture.

Breakfast is served all day, including other offerings from biscuits and gravy to Belgian waffles. The Breakfast Special goes for $3.99 and includes a choice of eggs, meat and breads.

However, there are many other popular items on the diner’s menu, including crispy hand-dipped onion rings and the traditional chicken fried steak.

During the lunch rush, many patrons opt for the hamburger menu. Vickery Café cooks hand pat 6 oz. burgers made of fresh, not frozen ground beef that is seasoned with Haddad’s secret combination of ingredients.

When it comes to creating a successful dining spot, Haddad has the experience. He’s been in restaurant business since he was 15 years old and spending his weekends helping out at his dad’s restaurant. Haddad likes to joke about how he went on to school to get a biology degree, but still wound up in the restaurant business.

“I’ve got this $100,000 degree and I’m rolling omelets.”

The Vickery Boulevard Café is open every day from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. and can seat small and larger sized crowds. The café also offers catering for small affairs.
