Description:
Reception for the artist: December 5, 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. Philip John Evett's primary inspiration for his sculpture is the female form. His sculpture evolves intuitively as he joins a variety of woods, without relying on preparatory drawings, to create fanciful figures. Evett was born in England in 1923. After studying art, serving in the Royal Air Force, and teaching, Evett decided to make Texas his home in 1954. Early on, he focused on portrait commissions of Texas notables such as J. Frank Dobie, Sam Houston, and Governor Allen Shivers. He taught sculpture and figure drawing from 1958-61 at the San Antonio Art Institute. In 1962 he became the professor of sculpture at Trinity University, a position he held until his retirement in 1988. Evett moved to Blanco in the Texas Hill Country where he continues to make sculpture. He has participated in over 50 group and solo shows including one-person exhibitions at the Tyler Museum of Art in 2004 and at the McNay Art Museum in 2005. Evett's work can be found in the collections of the McNay Art Museum, the San Antonio Museum, the Tyler Museum of Art, the Witte Museum, The University of Texas at Austin, the Montclair Museum in New Jersey, the Roswell Museum, and the University of Oklahoma. Valley House Gallery is honored to present our second solo exhibition of Evett's sculpture.
