We’re all getting older. Each day, hour by hour, we’re making our way into our senior years. Hopefully, we can each look back on the life we’ve lived and feel we’ve done some good – doing kind, generous and merciful acts. Here’s an opportunity to do good and help our four-legged buddies all at the same time!
With rising health costs and narrowing pensions, many seniors find it hard to make ends meet. Veterinary bills and pet food costs are commonplace for many of us, but can be luxuries for others when times are tight. Seniors benefit from animal friends for their companionship and cognitive stimulation. When activity levels are declining, having a pet to walk gives seniors motivation and a sense of purpose. Remembering to feed and care for a pet helps keep memories active. I know having a dog in my life is not something I’d be willing to give up with age.
There are two local groups teaming up to help seniors right in our backyard with an event called the Dog Days of Summer Pet Food Drive.
The Seniors Pet Assistance Network (SPAN) is a private, non-profit agency that helps seniors with vet and food bills and Accessible Home Health Care provides seniors with home-health nursing care. They’re sponsoring this event through August 24 in an effort to provide seniors with pet food for their beloved furry friends.
There are five Dallas-area pet food drop-off locations:
-- The Wellington, 600 W. Arapaho Road, Richardson; 469-330-2800
-- Monticello West, 5114 McKinney Ave., Dallas; 214-528-0660
-- Lucky Dog Barkery, 8320 Preston Center Plaza, Dallas; 214-368-6000
-- Sandy Lake Rehab, 1410 E. Sandy Lake Road, Coppell; 972-304-4444
-- Accessible Home Health Care, 10300 N. Central Expressway, Suite 468, Dallas; 214-987-2100
They're asking for Pedigree and Purina brands, bags between 7 and 20 pounds. Please be generous in your donations, as pet food can keep for many months. There will be a closing party at Monticello West on August 24 from 3-5 p.m. For more information, call Jann Horswell at 214-937-9541.
